Emantation is a speculative cli-fi novel that follows Marie, a young woman who has lived her whole life underground in an isolated bunker community that worships nuclear waste. When her mentor dies, leaving behind a stack of mysterious letters, Marie escapes in search of answers with the help of her only friend, the travelling merchant Poppy. The novel was partially inspired by my own experiences as a former cancer patient and interrogates the dehumanising way I have seen people talking to and about young cancer sufferers. It also takes the helplessness of dealing with a serious illness and applies it to the dystopian setting: when things are out of your control, how do you build hope and resilience?
